EU Officials Pay Courtesy Call on RSS

Management of the Regional Security System received a courtesy call from officials of the European Union’s (EU) Headquarters in Brussels, and its Barbados office, earlier today.

Among the delegation were EU Ambassador, Malgorzata Wasilewska; Deputy Director General, Directorate General for International Partnerships of the European Commission, Myriam Ferran; Managing Director, Americas, European External Action Service (EEAS), Brian Glynn; Team Leader, Olga Baus; and Programme Manager for Security, Luc Pazelt.

During the brief meeting, Executive Director of the RSS, Commodore Errington Shurland, outlined the various activities and roles of the organization and highlighted initiatives and projects which would soon be under way to reinforce security within the region.

He highlighted a number of matters which were affecting the RSS Member States, and the wider Caribbean, but pointed out that the issues were currently being addressed. These included: capacity building for cyber security; terrorism and terrorist financing; asset recovery management and relations with other security organisations.

His presentation was keenly acknowledged by the EU party, who expressed an interest in creating more linkages with the RSS in the future.

Also joining the high-level meeting was Executive Director of the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM-IMPACS), Lt. Col. Michael Jones, who shed some light on his organisation’s role and its impact on the Caribbean.

Following the meeting, the visiting party was given a tour of the RSS Headquarters, particularly the Fusion Centre which houses the Asset Recovery Unit, and the RSS Air Wing.
